Briefly summarize your nominated project for someone who is unfamiliar with your work. Think of this as your elevator pitch.
WE THE ECONOMY is a short film series developed in partnership between Cinelan and Paul G. Allen’s Vulcan Productions. WTE asks and answers 20 critical questions about the fundamentals of the US economy. The questions were developed by economic thought leaders and the films were directed by some of the best storytellers in the world including Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights) and Morgan Spurlock (CNN’s Morgan Spurlock Inside Man, Super Size Me) along with actors such as Amy Poehler, Sarah Silverman, Adrian Grenier, Bob Balaban and dozens more.
When did you first know that this work was going to be something special?
We always knew the scope and ambition of this project would make it special. But we weren’t quite prepared for the deep level of interest and engagement that came from our filmmakers, advisors, and platform partners, and how passionate they all were about the educational aspect and doing what they could to advance our goals. But the reality of what we had on our hands probably dawned on us most dramatically when Landmark Theatres agreed to premiere the films in 20 locations nationwide on a single night -- for free, something they’d never done before. For anyone.
What inspired you most to follow your dreams/vision while working on this project?
Our main inspiration for this project was to be able to create a series of 20 short films on the subject of the US economy that could be accessible by anyone at anytime and anywhere, keeping it fun, entertaining and educational.
