People Behind the Pixels

  • "Be relentless with optimism around your creation."

  • What inspired you most to follow your dreams/vision while working on this project?
We were fortunate to be presented with an almost completely open brief, with the only caveat being that our response had to run realtime in the browser. For us, there was one more condition—we needed to surprise and delight the conference attendees with our creation. This was a challenge that we were more than willing to take. We kept this at the back of our minds throughout the project and pushed our vision as far as we could, flowing an inspired idea through the design, development, and music composed for "People Behind the Pixels".

What made your project stand out in your industry/field and unique from the rest? What obstacles did that present and how did you overcome them?
While the sequence looks very much like elaborate cinematic film titles, it is in fact pushing the underlying web technology to its limit. Our film focused on simulating real physics to achieve a true 3D aesthetic and acceleration all using code. We sought to bring the animation to life in one click. We had to balance pushing the boundaries of design while acknowledging in development we were charting unexplored territories within the browser. The team worked hard to find the best solutions around which framework to use, which meant that every member of the team had to be agile and flexible in nature—constant collaboration, experimentation, prototyping, and iteration was key to finding those solutions.

When did you first know that this work was going to be something special?
It’s not everyday that you’re presented with the chance to create a title sequence for a web conference attended by the web’s leading experts from around the globe. And so, with this opportunity at our feet we approached it with the mindset that we needed to create something innovative, a piece that could be both creative and inspiring to the attendees. It was something we knew was going to be special from the get go.
